Tammy, James, and Mark of Flyaway Hanggliding were kind enough to let me try their new learning glider from Wills Wing, a truly different, brand new design that is also fun for experienced pilots to fly. This glider is the fine result of a sincere effort to best meet the needs of the first day flyer. The new Wills Wing Condor is a sophisticated, and very large glider that very significantly raises the standard for ease of learning (or degree of "nerfness"). With over 300 (!) square feet of sail, this glider just "floats like crazy!" Since it is also only about 50 pounds, balances well, launches easy, tracks hard into the wind AND lands nicely (really nicely!), I consider the Wills Condor 330 to be the best one-size-fits-all trainer ever made. My guess is that eventually they will also build a smaller version. If they don't, someone else will, because the design is so good! (With a listed stall speed of only 13 MPH...how much longer can it be before we have indoor flying, and soaring with fans--and paragliders too!!) This breakthrough is big news for hanggliding because here is a "frame" that not only launches very easily, but also lands "like a paraglider," which is "like a feather!" It's been a long time since I've been this excited and intrigued by a new glider. But the new Wills Wing Eagle 164 is also intriguing, as is their new, simple drogue chute. Hangglidings future looks very bright! Competition between companies over which gliders are "safest and easiest to fly" and which has the "safest landing characteristics" is the healthiest thing that can happen to self-launch sports. And now, the race is really on, thanks to Wills Wing! |
